Kigurumi.ca is a proud distributor of authentic SAZAC kigurumi. SAZAC is Japan's number one kigurumi manufacturer, and the quality of SAZAC onesies is unmatched around the world. Unfortunately, this means that many other manufacturers will try (and fail!) to mimic SAZAC products. It doesn't take much to notice a major difference in quality between authentic kigurumi and imitators' attempts, so we've compiled this easy guide to help you avoid making a regrettable purchase.
For starters, imitation kigurumi are generally made of much thinner fabric--sometimes crushed velvet, which deteriorates much more quickly than fleece, cotton, and poly--and are poorly stitched together. Fakes tend to have wonky-looking faces: crossed eyes, asymmetrical features, and visible stitch defects. Colors won't be nearly as vivid, lining is often missing altogether, and features such as sleeves, tails, ears, wings, etc., will be overall much more floppy and downright sad-looking. You can see the differences for yourself in the photo comparisons below.
If your kigurumi is coming direct from China or Hong Kong, be careful, as there's a high likelihood that not only will it be much less visually appealing than the real thing, it'll also be totally unable to withstand more than a couple of dance parties, sleepovers, and ski hills--and where's the fun in that?
Fake vs. Real: Owl Kigurumi
The SAZAC brand Owl is on the right, and the imitation is on the left. Notice the missing lining, the dingy color, the misplaced chest details, and the oddly-shaped tail?
Let's take a closer look at the faces...
You can tell which is which! The fake has scratchy seams, floppy face-feathers, and is clearly of lower quality than the SAZAC-branded onesie.
Here's another example...
Fake. vs. Real: Stitch Kigurumi
Once again, the differences are obvious. Smaller hood, smaller tail, poor quality materials, awkward fit, significant details are outright missing... the list goes on.
Here's a close up of the hoods
The image speaks for itself, doesn't it? If you want to look forward to wearing your kigurumi over and over again (as we do!), we strongly recommend making sure your onesies are official SAZAC onesies. We guarantee that the quality is worth the investment, as do our many years' worth of happy customers!
